Homecoming is looking for dedicated captains to help organize the various events that contribute to Penn State's annual tradition. Applications must be submitted and
returned to the Center for Student Engagement in 209 HUB no later than 5pm Friday, March 7th. Please see below for a description of all available positions
This captain will be in charge of creating an information packet about Homecoming that will be sent out to all of Penn State's
Alumni Chapters. The packet will outline alumni events occurring during the week of Homecoming. Tasks may include contacting the Alumni Association
for mailing addresses, assembling the contents of the packets, and contacting other committees for event information.
Student-Alumni Ice Cream Social Captain (1)
This captain will be responsible for planning the Student-Alumni Ice Cream Social. He or she will be working closely
with the Alumni Association to formulate the layout of the event as well as the event's timeline. This captain will also be responsible for
publicity for the event and increasing student attendance.
Tailgate Competition Captain (1)
This captain's main focus will be organizing the Alumni Tailgate Competition. He or she will be responsible for formulating the
competition's rules and scoring rubric, getting in touch with alumni contestants, creating a timeline for the day of judging, and help in the judging of the entered tailgates.
Competition
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will be responsible for the organization of the committee as a whole, which will include helping other captains as needed and
being familiar with each captains' responsibilities. This captain will also act as the Overall's assistant for all Homecoming events.
Friends & Family Tent Captains (2)
These two captains will be in charge of the friends and family tent on parade day. They will design and print the Friends and Family
Tent invites along with the Thank you cards. These captains will also coordinate the drop off times for CR donations to the tent. They will also be in charge
of entrance into the tent and distributing the passes for the tent that they will have copied and laminated.
Judging Captains (2)
There will be two judging captains for the 4 competitive events during homecoming (Airbands, Madhatter, Banner and Float). These two
captains will be in charge of making contact with potential judges as well as assigning the judges to events to be judged. They will be
at the events to greet all the judges and explain the process/scoring sheet to them. On parade day these captains will be at the parade
grounds checking the floats and tallying the Rules and Regs spirit points.
Points Captain (1)
This captain will be present and responsible for recording scoring all of the spirit points for the different events. Another
responsibility of the captain is sign-ins for events and organizing the other captains to help with the sign-ins. They
will also be responsible for submitting the standings for spirit points on the website each day.
Corporate Relations
Administrative Assistant (1)
The administrative assistant will be responsible for taking minutes at the meetings, for ordering all committee clothing, and for
various odd jobs that don't fall into the other captain categories. They will also need to keep an updated spreadsheet of all incoming
donations and to which overall they will be going to.
Finance Liaison (1)
This captain will responsible for working in between Corporate Relations and Finance so that our two committees can work together. You are also responsible for
setting up "socials" and team building activities for our committee and others.
Merchandise Captains (2)
These two captains will be in charge of the merchandise sales. They will also be able to have a committee specifically for merchandise sales.
New Sponsor Captain (1)
This captain will be responsible for involving new businesses in Homecoming.
Overall Donations Captain (1)
This captain will be in charge of making sure that every committee's donation needs are met. You will be working with the assigned overalls
closely to make sure all requests are met.
Past Sponsor Captain (1)
This captain will be responsible for last year's sponsors and contact them to become sponsors again for this year.
Wal-Mart Captain (1)
The Wal-Mart captain will be in charge of drafting a letter and sending it out to all the Wal-Mart's in the state and try and get a $20 gift card from each.
They will also try and see if they can work the same plan for Target, as well as the grocery stores in the area.
Finance
Finance Liaison Captain (1)
This captain will act as the liaison to all of the other Homecoming Overalls. They will work with other overalls to help them with any financial matters.
This includes their various budgets, purchase orders and check reimbursements, answering financial questions or any other administrative tasks that may arrive.
Fundraising Captain (1)
This captain will work closely with the overall to develop various fundraising events that will support Homecoming. This includes developing new and
innovative events as well as working with corporations to develop fundraising strategies for homecoming.
Merchandise Captains (2)
These captains will help to control all of the Homecoming merchandise that is ordered. They will be involved in keeping relationships with all of our
corporate merchandise companies, helping to maintain inventory, forecast how much merchandise will be needed, and work with the Finance and Corporate
Relations Overalls to control the merchandise cash flows.
King & Queen
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will assist the Overall in operating activities and tasks such as errands, emails, ANGEL, Facebook (advertising, groups),
minutes, etc. Other duties include collecting of committee monies for t-shirts, etc. They will also order committee t-shirts and plan social
events. Furthermore, this captain is responsible for the ordering of the sashes (court, king, queen, and marshals), the crowns, flowers, and
court sweatshirts. Lastly, this captain will assist the Special Events captain in the planning of events and will act as a liaison between the
Overall and other committees
Court Liaisons (2)
The Court Liaisons are in charge of the Homecoming Court, or the "middle men" between the Overall and the Court. This includes the past
Kings and Queens, who will be invited to the Court Reception and Coronation. Duties will include emailing, creating a contact list and answering
court questions. They will also be responsible for creating the "Court Survival Guide" and the "Parent Survival Guide" which will detail the times,
places, and dress at various homecoming events. Furthermore, these captains will be responsible for photography of the court and the submission of
their personal 'bios' to the Homecoming website. For the Court Reception, these captains will be in charge of a slide show to be shown that night. Lastly,
these captains are responsible for the Court attendance at each event.
Publicity Captain (1)
This captain will be the liaison to the Public Relations Committee for the advertising of all King and Queen Events. This includes nominations,
applications, and voting. The publicity captain will also coordinate invitations for the Court Reception, organize the Court Biography Video with
the Videography team, and find venues for this video to be played at (the HUB TV, etc.) Furthermore, this captain will find venues (other than Homecoming
events) at which the Court can be on display in public.
Special Events Captain (1)
This captain is in charge of coordinating special events unique to the King and Queen Committee. This will include the planning of the
Homecoming Court Reception as well as being the Pep Rally/Coronation liaison to the Pep Rally/Coronation captains on Special Events.
Voting Captains (2)
These captains will be vital in the logistics of the Court selection process. Along with the Overall, they will assist in nomination compilation, nomination notification,
and applications and scoring. These captains will also be the liaison to the interviewing judges, and assist in the making of the judging rubric. Lastly, they will
be in charge of creating venues for King and Queen Voting (such as computers setup in the HUB during the voting week) by working with the Technology Captains/Overall.
OPPerations
Pomp and Technology Captain (1)
This captain will help with the logistics of pomp distribution. They will attend meetings with FPA, schedule distribution times, and assist with
distribution. This captain will also stay in contact with the technology committee and help develop timelines for any assistance OPP will provide.
Specifically this captain will be in charge of making sure the needs for the webcast on parade day are met.
Security and Parade Liaison (1)
This captain will stay in contact with the security and parade committees and help develop timelines for any assistance relevant to OPP.
Competition Liaison (1)
This captain will stay in contact with the competition committee and help develop timelines for any assistance OPP will provide.
Specifically, this captain is in charge of the Friends & Family Tents on parade day and other competition events during the week.
Special Events Liaison (1)
This captain will stay in contact with the special events committee and help develop timelines for any assistance OPP will provide.
Logistics Liaisons (2)
These captains will be the utility/go-to people throughout the planning stages and parade day. These captains will schedule social events, assist
other captains with their events, and be in charge of Gator transportation on Homecoming week. These captains will have a Gator assigned
to them for the sole purpose of transporting overalls and captains from other committees on parade day.
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will assist Overall with matters pertaining to the committee. Examples include sending emails, typing memos, social events, and buying t-shirts.
Parade
Business Liaison (1)
Responsible for dealing with corporate relations on getting the things we need for the parade. They will also be responsible for building the corporate sponsors float on parade day.
Alumni Relations Liaison (1)
This person will be responsible for organization of the alumni participation in the parade. This will include creating a letter to send out to
Alumni Associations informing them of parade day registration & answering any questions or concerns these groups may have.
Emcees Captain (1)
This person will be responsible for securing the emcees for the parade. They will also create the script for parade day.
OPPerations Captain (1)
Responsible for rules and regulations that apply to the parade. They will inform the captains of float regulations and lead the float
inspections and float drop-offs. Also, responsible for creating a list of captain assignments for float inspection. They are in
charge of creating and conducting the parade workshop.
Technology Liaison (1)
This person will assist the technology Overall and committee on the web cast for the parade.
Convertibles and VIP/LEGENDS Liaison (1)
This captain will work on getting the convertibles and drivers for the parade. They will also help the Overall create the invitations to send the
VIPs and help the Overall keep track of the RSVP's.
Student Organizations (1)
Responsible for student organizations participating in Homecoming parade. This captain will work to create spreadsheets of organizations
and their needs (flatbed, walking, etc.) They will help create the check-in order for parade day.
Public Organizations and Bands (1)
This person will be responsible for organizing State College's participation in the parade. This includes high school bands.
Public Relations
Public Relations Captains play an integral role in Homecoming. Without these Captains, events would not be publicized. Captains work with other committees to
ensure that all committees are getting the publicity that they need. Work that is done as a Captain will build practical business skills and give experience in
publicity-related fields such as public relations, advertising, and marketing.
Administrative Assistant (1)
Captain is responsible for assisting the overall from an organizational standpoint. Duties include taking and sending meeting minutes,
planning social events, ordering clothing, and ensuring that all materials are ready to be released. Captain should have good organizational skills.
Advertising Captains (2)
Captains are responsible for designing and creating advertisements that will appear in The Daily Collegian, Penn Stater, Preface, and The Center
Daily Times. Also, they will be designing all of the flyers for Homecoming special events and meetings. Applicants should have experience with design
programs such as Dreamweaver or InDesign and exhibit knowledge of advertising design. Preferred majors include Graphic Design or Advertising.
Public Relations Captains (5)
Captains are responsible for writing press releases and PSAs to be sent to TV and Radio stations. Also, they will be writing feature articles to
be put in local newspapers. Applicants should have strong writing skills. Also, they should exhibit strong communication skills because they will
be contacting the public to make publicity requests and verify contact information. Preferred majors include journalism and public relations.
Special Events Captains (2)
Captains are responsible for organizing and coordinating Homecoming Night Out at The Gingerbread Man on October 15, 2008. This includes booking
bands, publicizing the event, and staying in close contact with management of the venue. Applicants should be organized and responsible. Preferred
majors include marketing, public relations, and business. Captains should be over 21.
Street Team Captain (1)
Captain is responsible for managing the 2008 Homecoming Street Team. This team will work on campus and downtown to promote Homecoming
events. The captain will coordinate the Street Team and make sure all tasks are completed.
Security
Security Captains provide the fundamental framework for all Homecoming events, ensuring the safety both observers and participants alike. They are an integral part
of the success of Homecoming. Through hard work and a lot of fun, Homecoming 2008 will be the best yet!
OPPeration Liaisons (2)
This captain will work with his or her counterpart from the OPP committee. He or she will develop a cohesive relationship with the
committee and ensure that the needs of both parties are being met. They will also work on the planning required for accurate timing and location
of materials needed during Homecoming week.
Special Events Liaison (2)
This captain will work with the Special Events committee in an effort to clarify their security needs at events and therefore plan accordingly.
Enforcement (2)
These Captains will help ensure that all rules are being followed, ensuring that Homecoming remains a safe environment. They will
participate in activities such as monitoring the parade grounds, making sure that all organizations are acting appropriately. They will also
work with the Competition Overall in the understanding of the Rulebook. * Note that the above positions work significantly with other committees, which allows for the development of relationships and
cohesive planning that will make Homecoming week a guaranteed success.
IFC and PHC AVPs Assistants (2)
These two captains will assist the AVPs in whatever they need with regard to the planning and organization of The Homecoming Day of Service. * Note that all captains will be Day of Service Captains for the event in September.
Captain Olympics (1)
This captain will assist the IFC and PHC AVPs in her planning of the Captain Olympics. Security Captains will be hosting this event, so all will be involved.
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will assist the Overall from an organizational standpoint, ranging from paperwork help, minutes, arranging
social events for the committee, as well as ordering merchandise.
Welcome Week Captains (2)
These captains will work the Overall and the Welcome Week Committee in developing an event promoting Homecoming during Welcome Week Note: All captains may be involved in the actual event
Planners (2)
These captains will be very detailed oriented; they are responsible for developing timetables for Homecoming week, especially
parade day, in an effort to ensure that everyone involved understands their responsibilities at any given time.
Parade Day (6)
These captains will be with the Overall throughout parade day and will be making sure that everything is being accomplished at its
appropriate time; there will be a great deal of planning going into this, so all responsibility does not fall on just one day.
Committee Member Organization (2)
These captains will be responsible for the set up and planning of the HUB lawn event, where captains meet their committee
members; they will also assist the Overall in the organizational issues associate with the committee.
Special Event Coordinators (4)
These captains will assist the Overall in training all captains for their various duties at all events throughout Homecoming week.
Special Events
Nittany Pursuit (2)
These two captains will be responsible for planning the scavenger route, writing clues and compiling and organizing props for the event.
Pep Rally (2)
These two captains will be responsible for inviting and confirming student teams and organizations, securing MC's, working with Larry Moore and
Galaxy, and creating the time line for the event. Pep Rally captains will collaborate with Technology captains as well.
Airbands (2)
These two captains will be responsible for selecting and securing MC's, overseeing event registration, organizing organization CD's,
working with Eisenhower Auditorium and creating the timeline and performance order for this event.
Raise the Song (2)
These two captains will be responsible for entertainment, as well working with publicity and the venue for this event. They will be in charge of
selecting and maintaining contact with the bands.
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will assist the Overall in errands, emails, Angel, minutes, etc. Other duties include ordering committee clothes, as well as planning
social events. The Administrative Assistant will also help out the other captains when needed. In the Fall, the administrative assistant will assist
the captains in event registration and check-in sheets.
Technology
Administrative Assistant (1)
This captain will act as the primary liaison between the Technology committee and all other Homecoming committees. They will also be responsible for
meeting minutes, clothing orders, social events, and assisting all other captains in their duties.
Photography Captains (2)
Photography captains will take pictures at all Homecoming events as well as administrate a virtual web album on the Homecoming website. No website or
photography experience is required for this position.
Special Projects (2)
These captains will be responsible for all projects under the Homecoming Technology Committee. Current projects for this year include the Homecoming webcast and
spirit point check-in system. Check-in system will be coded in C++ or web based software so experience in either field is recommended.
Videography Captains (4)
These captains will be in charge of creating videos throughout the Homecoming season, including the Halftime video for the Homecoming football game. Experience with
Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, or other video editing software is recommended but not required.
Website Developers (3)
These captains will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the Homecoming website as well as the continued development of the Homecoming Online
Organization Database (HOOD). The HOOD is a web based database used to collect and organize all Homecoming information between the Homecoming Overall Committee and
all competing organizations. HTML, PHP and mySQL experience is recommended but not required.
University Relations
Commonwealth Campus Liaison (1)
This captain will be responsible for creating and keeping a relationship between the commonwealth locations throughout the year. Ideally,
this captain will be an internal member of the CCSG. They are responsible for appointing a Homecoming Liaison at each campus, providing the
representatives with the appropriate material and information, and attending CCSG council meetings. They will work closely with the CCSG
Executive committee. This captain will also be responsible for planning events necessary to include CCSG as Homecoming participants.
East Halls Celebration Co-Captains (2)
These two captains will be responsible for the planning and execution of the East Halls Celebration on October 13th, 2008.
They will work with ResLife to create a fun, energized event that gets students excited about Homecoming. These captains will recruit
student organizations to perform during the celebration.
Homecoming HUB Celebration Co-Captains (2)
These captains will be responsible for the planning and execution of the first-annual Homecoming Celebration in the HUB on October
15th, 2008. They will be responsible for the reservation of space in the HUB as well as the recruitment of student organizations to
perform during the celebration. These captains will work to create a fun, energized event that gets students excited about Homecoming.
New Organization Captain (1)
This captain will be responsible for the recruitment and management of any new organizations interested in Homecoming.
They will assist with the New Organization Information Session held on March 26th, 2008 and will be the contact person for these organizations.
They will help the organizations through the entire registration and Homecoming process, continually checking on the progress of the organizations.
This captain will also be responsible for following-up with the new organizations of 2007 and encouraging them to participate again in Homecoming 2008
