Homecoming 2009 Official Theme and Logo
Penn State homecoming is a distinct event every year that brings out the true PSU spirit within students, faculty, and alumni. Our mascot, the Nittany Lion, has become a strong symbol of pride for our university, enlivening the students and fans at every football game. This logo uniquely represents that spirit and pride as a primarily typographic image.
The words "Remember the Lion Within" are in all capital letters, boldly portraying this year's theme. The form of a lion, which reflects our mascot, is hidden in between the words as if crouched in grass. His one eye is strong and resilient, and it is shown through the O in the word "LION." His paw depicts the year, and protrudes from the title, like our spirits emerge from ourselves. A logo with mostly type is an uncommon approach compared to recent years, so it stands out from the crowd. This logo not only integrates type with image for a literal meaning of this year’s theme, but it also represents a celebratory event that people are sure to remember.
Homecoming Legacy Logo
The perfect symbol to call Penn State alumni back home to PSU is the bell tower on the top of Old Main. The bell tower sits atop the first building constructed on campus, razed and rebuilt using limestone blocks from the original building, and is fortunate to be rich in the history of this great university. The various opportunities, academic, philanthropic, athletic, and social, that Penn State University offers its students makes each graduate’s experience and memories truly unique. In the center of all this diversity sits Old Main, regularly announcing its presence from the bell tower. Old Main is a universal symbol of a proud and passionate Penn State community. The chimes still ring daily for current students and eagerly await the return of alumni, especially at homecoming.
